A long-time resident of Anaheim, Al migrated here in 1996 from Sri Lanka. He was active in the Anaheim community as a community organizer, which led to his running for Anaheim office. He was elected to the Anaheim City Commission in 2007. He ran in 2012 for the Anaheim Union High School District and outraised all his opponents, but came in fourth. Then an incumbent Board member was elected to a city council seat, and Al was selected and appointed to the spot last February.
Al works for Orange County Health Care Agency at the OC jail, overseeing medical-record management. Not surprisingly, education is a key issue for him. His mother was a teacher for 30 years. He sees community kids going through the jail system and feels education is the best way to help them, and is where he could make the biggest difference.
