Geraldine Thompson is serving her first term in the Florida state Senate. She has devoted her life to advocating for the rights of women, children, minorities and the disadvantaged.
After receiving an undergraduate degree from the University of Miami in 1970 and a Master of Science Degree from the Florida State University in 1973, Geraldine worked as a teacher for six years in the Orange County Public Schools. She later served as Director of Equal Opportunity and Assistant to the President of Valencia College.
In 2006, she was elected to the Florida House of Representatives District 39. She is the first African-American female to represent Orange County. During her service in the House, Geraldine filed legislation to increase access to health care and fund breast cancer research. Her colleagues elected her to serve as Democratic Leader Pro Tempore, the second-highest ranking Democrat in the Florida House, in 2008.
