Hoon-Yung Hopgood is serving his first term in the Michigan State Senate. He is the only Korean American in the Michigan legislature and is the first to serve in the Senate.

Hoon-Yung had served as a state representative since 2002. He serves on the Appropriations Committee as the Minority Vice-Chair of its Agriculture, Department of Environmental Quality, Department of Natural Resources and the K-12 School Aid and Education subcommittees. He also serves as Minority Vice-Chair of the Education Committee and the Energy and Technology Committee.
