A longtime resident of Washington State, Mary McNaughton has a distinguished career and reputation as a community leader through her work as a nurse, small business owner, union leader and veteran. Today Mary is an Oncology and Surgical nurse at Swedish Edmonds Hospital and member of SEIU 1199NW and the Washington State Nurses Association. Throughout her life Mary has championed efforts to improve the quality of life and health of her community in healthcare, education and women’s rights. Mary’s community activism started at a young age when she led an effort to change a policy at her middle school that prohibited girls from enrolling in shop class. She was successful and went on to force similar changes in her high school that resulted in the first female auto mechanic class. In 1985, Mary helped organize and direct a cooperative preschool to better meet the needs of local kids.
