Running for political office is a significant undertaking - one that requires a level of commitment only outweighed by the benefits of helping to shape policies in your community, your state and your country. And, while choosing a career in public service is an honorable decision, it is not one to be made without a careful assessment of your skills, your personal circumstances and the political environment in which you will run.
The resources provided here will help you determine whether running for public office is right for you, provide some of the basic guidelines and tips for running a successful campaign and give you links to other progressive organizations that may provide you with additional resources.
Making the Decision to Run
Here are essential tools that Progressive Majority uses with all our recruits as they work with us in making the decision to run for office. Years of hands-on experience has equipped us with identifying the questions each person considering running for office should answer. In addition to performing this assessment of yourself, you should assess the political environment in which you will run, gain an understanding of the candidate requirements and deadlines on the horizon and conduct initial research on yourself, your opponent and the issues expected to arise in the campaign.Using the Progressive Majority Candidate Self-Assessment to take stock of yourself and using the Political Landscape Assessment and Initial Opposition and Issue Research to take stock in your political environment will guarantee a strong campaign foundation and put you on a winning path for a successful candidacy.
