The 80th is one of the two most important legislative targets in California this year, because the conservative incumbent is term-limited out of office. Demographically, the seat has been trending more and more Democratic and is ready for a progressive victory. In addition, all of the openly gay Assembly-members will be termed out in January 2009. Angela Cotera

Arizona
Candidate for State Senate - District 12 (Open Seat)
Avondale, Buckeye, El Mirage, Goodyear, Litchfield Park

Photo of Angela Cotera

This Candidate is part of the Racial Justice Campaign Angela Cotera is an astrophysicist seeking office for the first time. She is running for the Senate in District 12. This district is in the fast-growing far western portion of Maricopa County and is part of our strategic plan. It includes the town of Avondale where last fall we fielded Marie Lopez Rogers in her successful race for mayor. While it is technically an open seat, ultra-conservative John Nelson, who is term-limited out of his Assembly seat, is attempting to trade seats with conservative Robert Blendu, the current Senate incumbent. In 2006, no Democrat ran for the Senate in District 12. Angela, grew up in Flagstaff. She holds a Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University and is a research astrophysicist for the Carl Sagan Center, SETI Institute. She has volunteered in schools for years to bring her passion for astronomy to students. She and her husband have lived in Avondale since 1991. During the 2006 elections, her frustration with elected political leaders at the local, state and national levels compelled her to run for office to change the political landscape of Arizona. Angela will provide representation to Arizona's Latino/a community as a Latina State Senator. She is running as a participating candidate under the Arizona Clean Elections law.

Ted Maish

Arizona
Candidate for State Senate - District 20 (Challenger)
Portions of Phoenix, Tempe, and Chandler

Photo of Ted Maish

Ted Maish is a first-time candidate running for the State Senate in District 20. He is a precinct committee member and former teachers' union leader. He is challenging incumbent John Huppenthal, who is waging some of the right wing's most destructive battles. Huppenthal is one of the architects of a school voucher policy that was designed to undermine funding for public schools while providing a significant tax loophole to Arizona corporations. Legislative District 20 is one of the Democratic Party's top targets in 2008, as it is the most Democratic district in the state in which Republicans hold all three seats (two House, one Senate). Ted will bring a strong pro-labor voice to the legislature. He will also be a tireless advocate for Arizona's teachers and schoolchildren who suffer in some of the most under-funded classrooms in the country. Ted also advocates for healthcare reform to make Arizona a leader in protecting children, seniors, and working families.

Northwest Maricopa County, including Peoria, Glendale and Sun City

We recruited Shawn in August 2007 when we were working with his brother-in-law, John Williams, who ran successfully for the Surprise City Council. The incumbent in Shawn's race, Rick Murphy, is a right-wing conservative who is unpopular in his own caucus. Shawn is a third generation International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) member and sits on the executive board of IBEW 640. He and his wife, a school teacher, have three daughters. He is running under Arizona's Clean Elections law.

Under his leadership, all schools in the district will have gymnasiums for use both during the school day and also for after school programs and summer usage. Jennifer Brady

Ohio
Candidate for State Representative - District 16 (Incumbent)
Bay Village, Rocky River, North Olmstead, Fairview Park

Photo of Jennifer Brady

Jennifer Brady is the Representative from the 16th Ohio House District. Progressive Majority endorsed Jennifer in 2006 because of her commitment to progressive values, activism in the community, strategic mindset and strong work ethic. In 2006, Progressive Majority was one of very few organizations to support Jennifer after the House Democratic Caucus wrote off her race. Since then, we have been working closely with her on strategy, field organization and fundraising. According to Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett, ''The 16th District is the number-one Republican target for 2008.'' It is a must-keep if Democrats are to take over the House. Traditionally, the 16th has been known as the most Republican district in Cuyahoga County, which made Jennifer's 2006 victory the pleasant surprise of the cycle for Progressives. The Republicans have recruited Nan Baker, a conservative member of the Westlake city council colloquially known as the ''Republican Jennifer Brady.'' Jennifer has been a progressive champion in the Assembly who refuses to vote against her values, thus displaying the courage and conviction that helped her win in 2006.

Matt Patten

Ohio
Candidate for State Representative - District 18 (Open Seat)
Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Township, Berea, Strongsville, and North Royalton

Photo of Matt Patten

Matt Patten is the Democratic candidate for the 18th Ohio State House District. Matt has a long history of activism and labor organizing and is currently a Regional Labor-Management Field Coordinator. The performance of the district is expected to improve even further as the popular Republican incumbent is jumping to the state Senate and his successor, Robert Spada, is considered far too conservative for this Democratic-trending district. As a professional community organizer, Matt is a fearless champion for improving economic opportunity, education, and universal access to healthcare. He has the endorsements of local and statewide labor. This seat is a top-tier pickup in the quest for the four seats we need for a Democratic majority in the Ohio House of Representatives.

Peter Goldmark

Washington
Candidate for Commissioner of Public Lands (Challenger)

Photo of Peter Goldmark

Peter Goldmark has owned and operated his family's Okanogan ranch for more than 30 years. In 2006, Peter ran for Congress. It was a surprisingly competitive race against an entrenched incumbent in WA-5, a very conservative congressional district. Progressive Majority, along with members of our Washington Advisory Council, helped recruit Peter into the race for Commissioner of Public Lands. The Lands Commissioner is Washington state's highest environmental office; the position oversees the state's Department of Natural Resources. The conservative incumbent commissioner, Doug Sutherland, continues to publicly express skepticism regarding the causes and potential impacts of global warming.

Pam Brokaw

Washington
Candidate for Clark County Commissioner - District 1 (Open Seat)

Photo of Pam Brokaw

A former newspaper reporter and congressional staffer, Pam Brokaw is the executive director of a non-profit organization that builds sustainable, affordable housing. She is also the former chair of the Clark County Democratic Party. With the help of Progressive Majority, Pam sought office for the first time in 2004, running for the legislature in the conservative 18th district. Although she did not win the seat, Pam ran a strong race and won endorsements from three major area newspapers during the hard-fought campaign. After being recruited by Progressive Majority in early 2007, Pam announced in December her bid for the open commission seat. She has strong support from elected Democratic representatives at the local and state level as well as Progressive Majority 2005 and 2006 candidate Clark County Commissioner Steve Stuart. The commission is currently made up of one progressive, one moderate Democrat and one conservative. The moderate Democrat is retiring, so Pam's election would mean the body will swing to a progressive majority. Clark County is the fastest-growing county in the state, so control of the commission means that critical land-use decisions will be made in favor of the environment instead of big developers. Pam is the sole Democrat in the race and there are currently three conservatives running.

Helen Price Johnson

Washington
Candidate for Island County Commissioner - District 1 (Challenger)

Photo of Helen Price Johnson

Helen Price Johnson, along with her husband, owns and manages a successful small business on Whidbey Island. She was elected to the South Whidbey School Board in 2001, and currently she represents the board on legislative issues at the state and federal level. In 2006 we helped elect Progressive Majority candidate John Dean to the Island County Commission. He is the sole progressive on the three-member commission. John introduced us to Helen in early 2007 as a possible candidate for a future campaign. After meeting with Helen, we knew she would be a great candidate for the Island County Commission. If she wins we will have a progressive majority on the Island County Commission. In the summer of 2007, the four-term conservative District 1 incumbent stepped down from his seat. Subsequently, the Island County Planning Director, Phil Bakke, was appointed to fulfill the last year of his term, and is now seeking election. Bakke has proven to be closely aligned with the conservative Republican majority on the board. We need Helen on the Commission to stop Bakke from getting a solid conservative hold on this seat.

Jessica King

Wisconsin
Candidate for Wisconsin State Senate - District 18 (Challenger)
Oshkosh, East Winnebago County

Photo of Jessica King

Jessica King is just the kind of pipeline candidate we love to see emerge from our training and campaign assistance. Jessica has been a farm team member since 2005. She knew she wanted to run for office some day, and Progressive Majority helped guide her along the way, developing her campaign skills and defining her platform. When the time was right, she ran for Oshkosh City Council, and her 2007 victory helped flip the council to a progressive majority!

Jessica is now running for state Senate in an open seat being vacated by a conservative incumbent. This district is key to expanding the one-seat majority currently held in the Senate. Having grown up in Fond du Lac County, the rural, more conservative part of the Senate district, Jessica has a natural base in an area where progressives usually struggle. Her long history in the community - she went to grade school through college and now practices law in the district - will enable her to cross party and ideological lines, build consensus and work for real change.

Young, talented, and committed to her community, Jessica King is a real example of the progressive political pipeline we're working to create.

Kristen Dexter

Wisconsin
Candidate for Wisconsin State House - District 68 (Challenger)
Altoona, Eau Claire, Fall Creek

Photo of Kristen Dexter

Kristen Dexter is running an aggressive, smart campaign for the 68th Assembly seat. Kristen was a star campaign volunteer for Pat Kreitlow, a Progressive Majority candidate elected to the state Senate in 2006. Kristen is running because she wants to bring needed change to Madison, holding state representatives accountable to the people rather than big business or special interests.

Kristen's commitment to children and families in the Chippewa Valley is evident. She was elected to the Altoona School Board in 2001 and has served as Clerk of the Board since 2004. She also serves on the Regional Steering Committee for Health Literacy Wisconsin. Kristen learned the value of hard work growing up on her family's farm. She thinks it is time to put an end to the petty bickering in Madison and to get to work solving the problems that we face as a state. As state representative, she will continue to work for health care reform, to improve the economy, and to keep our education system strong in order to prepare our kids for the future.
