Internship Opportunities

Political

Get your feet wet in political campaign work by interning for Progressive Majority. We’re looking for three (3) interns to help us recruit, train and help elect strong progressive candidates across the country. If you support the progressive agenda and want to change politics from the ground up, apply today. You’ll work with our political team – a group of seasoned campaign workers and political organizers – learning the ropes at a successful, multi-million dollar political organization.

What you'll be doing:

  • Support a national political team member in one of the following functional areas: Outreach, Recruitment, or Campaign Services;
  • Interact with national and state-based allied organizations
  • Assist in moving potential progressive candidates through the Progressive Majority political program, including recruitment, vetting, development, and campaign operations;
  • Learn about and participate in the operations of a multi-million dollar, national political organization;
  • Expand their knowledge of the planning and execution of grassroots campaign activities, including voter contact, fundraising, and communications;
  • Build and maintain candidate data; help maintain candidate database;
  • Help coordinate calls and meetings for senior department staff;
  • General administrative office responsibilities;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Interns will be assigned to work in one of the functional areas (Outreach, Recruitment, Campaign Services); specific duties will depend on assignment.

What we're looking for:

  • Motivated self-starter and able to work well without constant supervision;
  • Interest in progressive issues, electoral politics, and candidate development;
  • Excellent communication, outreach, phone and interpersonal skills;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Online Organizing

Position Summary

Do you want to energize thousands of progressives online through engaging social media campaigns and online actions? Then apply to our Online Organizing Internship! You'll work with our Online Organizer to learn the best online strategies to brainstorm, build and launch successful online campaigns. You'll hone your digital skills through our website, blog, email and social media campaigns. When you're done, you'll have the foundation to build a career in any new media position.

What you'll be doing:

 Washington State Political Director

Position Summary

The Political Director reports to the State Director. The Political Director will work with the State Director to implement the overall Progressive Majority mission to recruit, train and help elect progressive candidates at the state and local levels.  All activities must support the ultimate goal of establishing Progressive Majority as the premier recruitment and support operation for progressive political candidates in the state.  Applicants should be committed to recruiting, training and coaching to create a pipeline of talented progressive candidates that ultimately win election to public office and impact the statewide political landscape, increasing the number of progressives holding political office and maintaining and expanding progressive majorities at the local and legislative levels in the state.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct in-depth, ongoing statewide research on the state’s political landscape using all available geographic, demographic and political data;
  • Work with the state director to identify emerging trends and political and legislative opportunities to recruit and elect progressive candidates to local and state legislative office;
  • Develop and maintain working partnerships with the coalition partners, labor union representatives, state party staff, communities of color and elected officials in order to assist recruitment efforts;
  • Travel throughout the state to attend and speak at meetings, conferences and conventions to recruit potential candidates for elected office (“farm team members”) and raise the profile of Progressive Majority;
  • Recruit potential farm team members by completing the intake, application and interview process with potential candidates for Progressive Majority’s candidate recruitment program;
  • Provide technical assistance to farm team candidates on all aspects of campaigning;
  • Assist the state director with planning and execution of small and large group training sessions for current and potential farm team members;
  • Assist in building Progressive Majority’s state-specific grassroots membership;
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of potential candidates;
  • Compile, update and utilize a comprehensive calendar of speaking and outreach opportunities around the state;
  • Provide regular reports, work plans and strategic plans to state director on recruitment and candidate support efforts;
  • Support the state director in fundraising events and other development activities.

Requirements

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience. 

Experience:
Four years of campaign and/or political organizing experience working with campaigns and/or in progressive politics.

Skills:

  • Thorough working knowledge of the state’s political landscape and campaign finance regulatory compliance.
  • Expert interpersonal skills in dealing with candidates, potential donors, board members and colleagues.
  • Strong and demonstrable skill in project planning, management and execution.
  • Exceptionally well-organized with strong time management skills and the ability to adjust to reflect changing priorities.
  • Strength in outreach and logistics management.
  • Strong writing and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work independently with broad guidance, and to take initiative to communicate on project needs and hurdles to ensure progress toward goals.
  • Technology friendly and willingness to utilize electronic contact and project management systems.
  • Strong commitment to empowerment of underrepresented communities.
  • Multi-cultural communication training and/or experience working with communities of color, the gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual (LGBT) community, youth and women welcomed.

Salary
Salary is commensurate with experience.
