Weekly dose of state legislation 8/11/11

There's some interesting state legislation floating around this week that pertains to elections, voting, and political parties. Make sure you know what's going on!

Achieving the American Dream

On July 25 2011,  Jerry Brown, the Governor of California signed AB 130 better known as the first part of the California Dream Act into law. This law provides high school graduates in California who immigrated to the United States without documentation under the age of 16 and have met the state residency requirements for in-state tuition the rights and privileges to access private scholarships to the University of California, California Community Colleges, and Cal Tech University.

State level is where it's at! State legislation round-up 7/28/11

It seems that everywhere you turn this week, all you hear about is the federal debt ceiling debate. If I hear "Gang of 6", "default", or "Boehner" one more time, I might explode. Take a break from the looming national crisis and brush up on the legislation that's being talked about in the states!

California to include LGBT history in curriculum

California makes progressive history again! The state legislature sent a bill to Governor Jerry Brown (D) requiring public schools to include the history of the LGBT community and the great contributions they made to society as part of California’s social studies curriculum. This is great news! Of course the social conservatives in the state assembly are accusing California Democrats of “brainwashing” children across the state.
