What to Do BEFORE You Run
This online training was conducted by Progressive Majority National Political Director Dean M. Nielsen on campaign plan writing on July 8, 2009. Running for political office is a significant undertaking - one that requires a level of commitment only outweighed by the benefits of helping to shape policies in your community, your state and your country. While choosing a career in public service is an honorable decision, it is not one to be made without a careful assessment of your skills, your personal circumstances and the political environment in which you will run. In this online training, we will identify the questions you should answer and groundwork you should lay before announcing your candidacy. This online training will be given by myself.
Prior to being national political director, I served as Progressive Majority's Washington state director and helped elect more than 100 candidates. After four elections, the Washington state office held the highest candidate win rate in the organization. As a career politico, I have also worked on hundreds of campaigns nationwide starting with Bill Clinton in 1992 and include others such as Gov. Gary Locke (WA), Solidarity Party (Poland), Gore/Lieberman, as well as issue work for EMILY's List, NARAL Pro-Choice Washington, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, SEIU and the Democratic Party.
